MCG nursing student receives Stepanek Scholarship

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Stacy Creighton, senior in the Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing at Athens, received one of four 2009 Mattie J.T. Stepanek Caregiving Scholarships from the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine has been selected to participate in a national conference aimed at improving clinical education for North American medical students. The 2009 Millennium Conference on Patient Safety – Implications for Teaching in the 21st Century, sponsored by the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at HarvardMedical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, will be held May 7-9 in Wellesley, Mass. 
 
Dr. Borders will increase focus on international presence

Dr. Jack Borders, a pediatric otolaryngologist specializing in airway management, has joined the Medical College of Georgia Department of Otolaryngolgy/Head and Neck Surgery in the School of Medicine as director of pediatric otolaryngology and international medicine.

Nettie Engels remembers the excellent care she received at the Medical College of Georgia after being diagnosed with cervical-uterine cancer five years ago. Today, she is giving back by volunteering as a patient adviser in a project to improve patient rounds.

Nursing student receives Beard Award for compassionate care

When Winston Wang cared for a patient awaiting brain surgery, he became more than just a nurse. He became a loyal friend, honorary family member and devoted prayer partner. Mr. Wang received the Medical College of Georgia’s 2008 John F. Beard Award for Compassionate Care in recognition of such a selfless approach to patient care. 
 
Coordinator named for MCG Center for Patient- and Family-Centered Care

Christine O’Meara, a former communications specialist with the North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation, has been appointed to the new position of program development coordinator for the Medical College of Georgia Center for Patient- and Family-Centered Care. “Chris’s appointment represents another important step to developing infrastructure and resources that support patient- and family-centered care and a new culture of safety at MCG,” says Pat Sodomka, director of the MCG Center for Patient- and Family-Centered Care and senior vice president for patient- and family-centered care for MCGHealth. 
 
Impact of electronic personal health record on hypertension under study

Whether patients with an electronic handle on their health are more successful at beating one of the nation’s leading chronic diseases is under study. The study, funded by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, will give hundreds of patients with hypertension an electronic personal health record that enables them to post their blood pressure, weight, even what they eat in their medical record and e-mail their physicians when needed.
