MCG celebrates National Allied Health Professions Week

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Students and faculty in the Medical College of Georgia School of Allied Health Sciences will celebrate National Allied Health Professions Week Nov. 2-8. "There is an unprecedented need for allied health professionals due to many factors, including the aging population, greater emphasis on team-oriented patient care, greater need for primary, preventive and rehab services, complexity of health information and enhanced technology in diagnostic testing, to name a few," says Dr. Kent Guion, the school's acting dean. "Any significant health care reform that increases access to care will further increase the need, so it's important that we prepare more of these professionals that populate essentially every health care venue." 
 
MCG School of Nursing hosts Non-Food Halloween Festival

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing will host its third annual Non-Food Halloween Festival Friday, Oct. 30 from 3-5:30 p.m. on the fourth and fifth floors of the Health Sciences Building.  
 
Red grape skin extract could be new treatment for sickle cell disease patients

AUGUSTA, Ga. – An extract in red grape skin may be a new treatment for sickle cell disease, say Medical College of Georgia researchers. The extract, resveratrol, a natural dietary polyphenol typically found in red wine and various plants and fruits, has been found to induce fetal hemoglobin (the main oxygen protein in the fetus), preventing red blood cells from sickling. 
 
Medical students, residents and faculty inducted into honor society Oct. 22

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Seventeen students, one resident and faculty member and two alumni in the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine will be inducted into the Georgia Chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Oct. 22. Alpha Omega Alpha is the only national honor society for medicine in the United States. Founded in 1902, AOA fosters honesty and higher ideals of scholastic achievement. 
 
MCG nursing student receives Stepanek Scholarship

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Stacy Creighton, senior in the Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing at Athens, received one of four 2009 Mattie J.T. Stepanek Caregiving Scholarships from the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving.

MCG community meets with presidential search committee

Dozens of Medical College of Georgia stakeholders on Tuesday turned out to ask questions and offer feedback to officials leading the search for MCG’s next president.The four-hour session, split between faculty, students, staff and alumni and the general public, enabled the presidential search committee to explain the inner workings of the months-long process to identify Dr. Daniel W. Rahn’s replacement. 
 
Nursing dean will give State of the School address Oct. 2
