First-year MCG medical students to host health fair for the homeless Nov. 14 Publish Date: 11-NOV-2009 02:53 PM AUGUSTA, Ga. – First-year Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine students will host a health fair for the homeless Saturday, Nov. 14.
The free health fair will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Garden City Rescue Mission, 828 Fenwick St., and will feature education about nutrition, stress relief and H1N1. Dental hygiene students will present oral health education. Medical students will offer hand sanitizer, foot powder, socks and information about proper foot care. They also will provide Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-inspired Keep It With You temporary medical information forms that list medical care and other health information for people without stable residencies.

"There is an unprecedented need for allied health professionals due to many factors, including the aging population, greater emphasis on team-oriented patient care, greater need for primary, preventive and rehab services, complexity of health information and enhanced technology in diagnostic testing, to name a few," says Dr. Kent Guion, the school's acting dean. "Any significant health care reform that increases access to care will further increase the need, so it's important that we prepare more of these professionals that populate essentially every health care venue."

Medical students, residents and faculty inducted into honor society Oct. 22 Publish Date: 21-OCT-2009 03:03 PM AUGUSTA, Ga. – Seventeen students, one resident and faculty member and two alumni in the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine will be inducted into the Georgia Chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Oct. 22.
Alpha Omega Alpha is the only national honor society for medicine in the United States. Founded in 1902, AOA fosters honesty and higher ideals of scholastic achievement.

Dental students host 5K Run/Walk Oct. 24 Publish Date: 19-OCT-2009 11:51 AM AUGUSTA, Ga. – Dental students at the Medical College of Georgia will host a 5K Run/Walk Oct. 24 to raise money for Give a Smile, a student-run foundation created to assist dental patients who need help paying at least a portion of their bill.
The organization was founded by 2007 graduate Dr. Nathan Dallas after treating a patient who lost her four front teeth due to domestic abuse and couldn’t afford dental work.
