Athens and Albany medical campuses on target for 2010, accrediting body says

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Resources are adequate for Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine to proceed with a four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia and a two-year residential clinical campus in Southwest Georgia, the accrediting body for U.S. medical schools has confirmed.  
 
Dr. Thompson honored by AAMC for contributions to medical education

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Dr. James N. Thompson, interim president of the Medical College of Georgia, has received one of three Special Recognition Awards from the Board of Directors of the Association of American Medical Colleges for his exceptional leadership to improve medical care through a focus on quality and safety. Dr. Thompson, an otolaryngologist and former medical school dean who served as president and chief executive officer of the Federation of State Medical Boards, was honored during the AAMC's Annual Meeting Nov. 6-11 in Boston.  
 
Red grape skin extract could be new treatment for sickle cell disease patients

AUGUSTA, Ga. – An extract in red grape skin may be a new treatment for sickle cell disease, say Medical College of Georgia researchers. The extract, resveratrol, a natural dietary polyphenol typically found in red wine and various plants and fruits, has been found to induce fetal hemoglobin (the main oxygen protein in the fetus), preventing red blood cells from sickling. 
 
Medical students, residents and faculty inducted into honor society Oct. 22

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Seventeen students, one resident and faculty member and two alumni in the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine will be inducted into the Georgia Chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Oct. 22. Alpha Omega Alpha is the only national honor society for medicine in the United States. Founded in 1902, AOA fosters honesty and higher ideals of scholastic achievement. 
 
Ten Clinical Nurse Leader students awarded $10,000 scholarships

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Ten Medical College of Georgia nursing students have received $10,000 scholarships from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program. Clinical Nurse Leader Program students Joshua Dunn, Aleshia Edwards, Tamiracle Ezell, Dayne Godwin, Tehrae Heflin, Patrick Hosey, Audrey Kim, Angel Mobley, Alexias Register and Lee Sullivan are the 2009-10 recipients. The program aims to alleviate a statewide nursing shortage by offering accelerated training for people with degrees in other fields. 
 
MCG nursing student receives Stepanek Scholarship

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Stacy Creighton, senior in the Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing at Athens, received one of four 2009 Mattie J.T. Stepanek Caregiving Scholarships from the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving. 
 
MCG will improve access to dental care in Georgia's underserved, rural areas

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry will improve access to dental care for underserved Georgians by increasing the state's dental workforce. A three-year, $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will enable MCG to increase the number of teaching sites in Georgia where dental students learn and increase loan forgiveness for graduates who opt to practice in underserved areas. 
 
Dr. Thomas Named Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar

Dr. Tami Thomas, an assistant professor at the School of Nursing at the Medical College of Georgia, has won a competitive grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to study strategies to slow the spread of viral sexually transmitted infections in rural communities.

Blocking protein may prevent blinding disease

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Blocking a protein that battles infection may help thwart a common cause of vision loss in chronic diseases such as diabetes, Medical College of Georgia researchers say. The protein, interleukin-6, prompts inflammation – a healthy and sometimes lifesaving defense against invaders such as bacteria and viruses. But the protein's action "is bad in diseases like diabetes because the inflammation is chronic," says Dr. Wenbo Zhang, a senior postdoctoral fellow in the MCG Vascular Biology Center.
